Typhon YagiOn the night between 1 and 2 September 2024, Typhoon Yagi hit the Philippines and southern China hard. The human toll over the two days reached at least 24 deaths and dozens of injuries.

On 7 September 2024, the storm, accompanied by wind gusts exceeding 149km/h, made its way towards northern Vietnam, causing severe flooding and landslides.

As of Wednesday 12 September, the death toll stood at 197, with 128 missing and over 700 injured. Power cuts, collapsed bridges, damaged factories and damaged roofs were among the consequences of the disaster.

According to local authorities, this was the strongest typhoon to hit northern Vietnam in thirty years.

After Vietnam, Yagi moved on to Thailand, Laos and Burma, where it claimed at least five lives.

Experts believe that typhoons are intensifying at a faster rate but weakening more slowly as a result of climate change.
