Natural catastrophes in France: 5.2 billion USD in insured losses in 2024

Inondations FranceA recent study conducted by France Assureurs suggests that insured losses resulting from natural disasters reached 5 billion EUR (5.2 billion USD) in 2024. This is the 9th most expensive year for the national industry.

Cyclones Belal, Garance and Chido, which hit French overseas islands, generated insured losses of around 1 billion EUR (1.04 billion USD). Damage caused by storms Kirk and Leslie and other storms in autumn 2024 amounted to 785 million EUR (817.6 million USD).

The flooding that affected the Nord and Pas-de-Calais regions between November 2023 and January 2024 cost 430 million EUR (447.9 million USD).

On a global scale, natural disasters have generated economic losses of 310 billion EUR (322.9 billion USD) in 2024, with 135 billion EUR (140.6 billion USD) to be borne by insurers, according to Swiss Re statistics.

The France Assureurs report also reveals that 2024 is considered the hottest year ever recorded in the world, with an average temperature of 15.1°C, or 1.3 degrees warmer than the norm.

With an average temperature of 13.9°C, 2024 is considered one of the five hottest years on record in France.
