On the night between 31 August and 1 September 2025, a magnitude 6.0 earthquake struck eastern Afghanistan, followed by at least five aftershocks, the strongest measuring 5.2.
The epicenter was located 27 kilometers from Jalalabad, the capital of Nangarhar province, at a shallow depth of just eight kilometers.
The latest death toll, updated on Thursday, 4 September, rose to 2 200, with more than 4 000 injured. Authorities warn that these numbers may rise as search and rescue efforts continue.
Local officials have also reported widespread material damage.
