According to preliminary estimates from Verisk (1), insured losses resulting from the earthquake that struck Japan in July 2026 are expected to range between 220 billion and 340 billion yen (1.4 to 2.1 billion USD).

These estimates cover property damage affecting residential, commercial, industrial, and common-area assets but exclude claims paid under Japan's national earthquake insurance program.

Verisk's loss model also excludes several categories of claims, including motor damage, business interruption, workmen's compensation, marine and aviation risks, claims handling expenses, landslides, and post-earthquake fires.

The magnitude 7.1 Kumamoto earthquake caused significant damage to buildings, highways, bridges, and rail infrastructure. Several semiconductor, electronics, and automotive manufacturing facilities temporarily suspended operations to carry out inspections and damage assessments.

According to preliminary reports from Aon and Howden Re, the July 2026 earthquake is expected to have caused less extensive damage than the 2016 Kumamoto earthquake, which generated an estimated 53 billion USD in economic losses and 7.7 billion USD in insured losses.
