Hurricane Beryl strikes Jamaica and makes its way to Mexico

hurricane BerylOn 3 July 2024, category 4 hurricane "Beryl", which generated winds of 215 km/h, struck Jamaica, resulting in seven deaths along its path in the southeastern Caribbean and Venezuela.

The storm was even temporarily upgraded to Category 5.

After being downgraded to Category 2 on 4 July 2024, Beryl gained strength and moved up to Category 3, heading for Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula.

The hurricane is now threatening the Mexican tourist towns of Cancún and Tulum, where tourists have been evacuated from hotels and over 100 domestic and international flights have been cancelled.

As the first Atlantic hurricane of the season, Beryl is considered as the earliest Category 5 storm ever recorded by the US weather service.
