Since 6 September 2024, the south and south-east of Morocco have been facing torrential rains, accompanied by violent winds. These have caused rivers to swell and triggered historic flooding.
According to the local government, 17 regions and provinces in the Kingdom recorded the equivalent of a year's rainfall in just two days.
As of Sunday 8 September, the death toll stood at 11, with 9 missing. The downpours also caused the collapse of 40 houses, as well as damage to 93 roads and water, electricity and telecommunications networks.
The torrential rains came at a time when the country was struggling with a water shortage caused by six consecutive years of drought.
A similar disaster also affected the south of neighboring Algeria. According to the Algerian Civil Defence, two people swept away by the waters are still missing, while several families trapped by swollen rivers have been rescued.
