The Tunisian Unified Motor Bureau (BUAT), responsible for managing the inter-Arab motor insurance card known as the Orange Card, began distributing rapid verification devices (QR code readers) on 18 June 2025 at 11 land border crossings, nine with Algeria and two with Libya.
The operation, which will continue until 25 June 2025, is designed to combat the falsification of motor insurance cards.
The new system, set to become operational on 1 July 2025, will enable real-time verification of the Orange Card’s authenticity. Algerian and Libyan motorists entering Tunisian territory will now be required to present a document that can be verified using the electronic devices installed at land border crossings.
According to Ahmed Hardoug, General Manager of BUAT, this initiative was prompted by the detection of several cases of fraud.
