On 26 August 2025, the Algerian government announced a series of preventive measures aimed at enhancing road safety across the country. Traffic accidents, particularly those involving passenger buses and heavy goods vehicles, remain a major public concern.
Key measures include:
- the immediate importation of 10 000 new buses to replace aging passenger transport vehicles
- the urgent importation of various types of tires
- the adoption of updated road traffic regulations, including stricter requirements for obtaining a driver’s license
- the imposition of third-party liability on drivers involved in road accidents, mandatory periodic vehicle inspections for motorists, and the expansion of screening centers to detect drug and psychotropic substance use
- the extension of liability for road accidents to additional parties, including road maintenance entities, driving schools, vehicle inspection centers, and any other organizations deemed responsible for an accident
These initiatives follow a tragic bus accident that occurred in the town of El-Harrach in Algiers on 15 August 2025, where the vehicle plunged into a river, resulting in 18 fatalities and approximately 20 injuries. Preliminary investigations attributed the incident to multiple safety failures, including overloading and malfunctions in the steering and braking systems.
