Glacier collapse in Switzerland: estimated insured losses

village de BlattenOn 28 May 2025, a glacier collapse followed by flooding completely destroyed the small village of Blatten in the Swiss canton of Valais.

All 300 inhabitants were evacuated. However, the material damage was substantial.

An initial estimate by the Swiss Insurance Association (SIA) suggests insured losses worth 320 million CHF (392.2 million USD).

260 million CHF (318.7 million USD) of this amount relates to damage to buildings and personal property. The remaining 60 million CHF (73.5 million USD) are covered by private insurers for business interruption and motor vehicle damage.
