Cyclone Belal in Réunion Island: 108.3 million USD in insured losses
Between 13 and 15 January 2024, cyclone Belal, accompanied by violent winds and heavy rainfall, hit the island of La Réunion, a French department located in the Indian Ocean.
According to France Assureurs, 42 100 insurance claims were filed, for a total estimated cost of 100 million EUR (108.3 million USD).
Most of these claims (86%) concern private property, followed by professional and agricultural property (10%) and damage to vehicles (4%).
This is the second most costly cyclone for La Réunion after cyclone Dina in 2002, which resulted in insured losses totaling 169 million EUR (183.1 million USD).
