As Egypt prepared to welcome the summer season, an unexpected storm struck the coastal city of Alexandria during the night between 30 and 31 May 2025.
The severe weather was accompanied by strong winds, torrential rain, and an exceptionally rare hailstorm for this time of year. In response, local authorities declared a state of emergency, and school examinations were postponed.
The storm caused significant disruption, as roads were flooded, trees were uprooted, and numerous vehicles sustained substantial damage. However, no casualties were reported.
According to local media, while such weather is typical along the Mediterranean coast during winter, it is highly unusual, if not unprecedented for late May.
