An interministerial decree has declared a state of natural disaster in the twenty-four communes of Reunion Island, following the passage of cyclone Garance on 28 February 2025.
As a result of this recognition, damage caused by the disaster can now be covered by insurance companies.
Cyclone Garance, which was accompanied by strong winds and heavy rain, has left a trail of devastation across the island which is home to almost 900 000 people, uprooting trees, sweeping away cars, causing mudslides and cutting off roads. Many people are still without power. The death toll has risen to five.
