Noto earthquake: cost for Japanese insurers

Noto earthquakeThe General Insurance Association of Japan (GIAJ) has reported that, as at 31 March 2025, local insurance companies had settled 126 698 claims relating to the earthquake that struck the Noto peninsula on 1 January 2024 with total payouts reaching 104.8 billion JPY (700 million USD).

GIAJ has also published the figures and amounts of claims paid up to 31 March 2025 for damage caused by other natural disasters in Japan in 2024.

Insurers paid out 136 billion JPY (907.6 million USD), or 149 612 claims, for losses caused by the hailstorms that struck the Hyogo Prefecture on 16 April 2024.

Typhoon ShanShan, which hit the country from 28 August to 1 September 2024, generated 77 469 claims for a total amount of 54.9 billion JPY (366.4 million USD).
