According to the latest estimate provided by research firm PERILS, insured losses in Turkey resulting from the Kahramanmaras earthquake are expected to reach 116.9 billion TRY, or 6.2 billion USD based on February 2023 exchange rates.
These estimates only include losses in the non-life insurance sector. Damage to other business sectors and to Syria is not reflected in the firm's balance sheet.
As a reminder, the Turkish province of Kahramanmaras was hit by a powerful earthquake on 6 February 2023. The tremor affected a large part of the south of the country and neighboring Syria.
According to PERILS, the disaster caused significant loss of life (around 62 000 deaths), while almost 3 million people were displaced.
