On 21 January 2025, in the middle of the night (1:30 a.m. Paris time), a fire broke out in the Grand Kartal Hotel in Kartalkaya, a ski resort in Turkey's Bolu Province.
The twelve-storey building accommodated 238 winter vacationers. The provisional death toll stands at 78.
A team of about 230 firefighters and rescue workers was deployed on site to fight the flames.
The cause of the fire is still unknown. Some witnesses, however, reported the absence of fire alarms and smoke detectors.
Eleven people, including the owner, general manager and chief electrician of the Grand Kartal, have been arrested as part of the investigation.
