Deadly floods in central Japan

Inondations au centre du Japon 21 et 22 sepptembreOver the weekend of 21 and 22 September 2024, unprecedented rainfall triggered severe flooding in central Japan, a region still reeling from the powerful New Year's earthquake.

As at 23 September, the death toll stood at six, with seven missing and 12 injured.

Flooding, landslides and muddy river overflows caused extensive material damage in Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan. More than 11 000 people were evacuated from their homes, while more than 6 000 households lost power.

Heavy rainfall exceeded 540 mm in the town of Wajima. This was the heaviest continuous downpour recorded in the region since 1976.
