Deadly earthquake strikes the Philippines

seisme-philippinesA powerful 6.9-magnitude earthquake struck Bogo, a city home to 90 000 residents in the northeastern part of Cebu Island in the Philippines, on 30 September 2025. The quake was followed by more than 300 aftershocks, at least four of which measured magnitude 5 or higher.

The provisional death toll has risen to at least 69, with 150 others injured. Rescue efforts are ongoing, as several people remain trapped beneath the rubble.

The tremor was felt across multiple provinces, leading to widespread power outages and significant structural damage. More than 22 buildings were reported destroyed or severely damaged.

The local seismology agency also warned of minor sea level disturbances and urged residents to avoid coastal areas as a precaution.
