The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has published its 2024 annual report on air safety. The study revealed that one accident occurred every 880 000 flights over the past year, while the 2020-2024 average was one accident every 810 000 flights.
Out of the 46 accidents recorded in 2024, seven were fatal, with a total of 244 deaths, compared with 72 in 2023 and 144 between 2020 and 2024.
The deadliest accident of the year was the crash of the Boeing 737-8AS operated by the South Korean low-cost carrier Jeju Air. The accident claimed 179 lives.
Tail strike during landings and runway excursions were the most frequently reported mishaps in 2024.
IATA statistics do not include accidents involving business, military and experimental aircraft.
