According to Munich Re, natural disasters caused an estimated 131 billion USD in global economic losses in the first half of 2025, with 80 billion USD covered by insurers.
Both figures exceed the ten-year average for the same period, which stands at 101 billion USD in total losses and 41 billion USD in insured losses.
The costliest event was the January forest fires in Los Angeles, with global and insured losses estimated at 53 billion USD and 40 billion USD respectively.
The deadliest catastrophe was the 7.7-magnitude earthquake in Myanmar on 28 March, which claimed the lives of 4 500 people, and caused 12 billion USD in economic damage.
