Initial estimates by Caisse Centrale de Réassurance (CCR) indicate that insured losses caused by the floods in France on 17 and 18 October could range between 350 and 420 million EUR (378 and 453 million USD). At least 50% of this amount will be borne by the reinsurer.
Between 17 and 18 October 2024, several French regions were hit by heavy rainfall, particularly the Central-East, South-East and Ile-de-France regions.
The heavy rains caused several rivers to swell, leading to the evacuation of large numbers of people and extensive property damage.
On the night of 17 October, 33 departments were placed under orange alert, while six others were under red alert.
Paris recorded the equivalent of two weeks' rain in just one hour.
