After several months of negotiations, Aon and Willis Towers Watson have terminated their merger project. Launched on 9 March 2020, the major transaction worth 30 billion USD has stopped following the objections of the American authorities.
The Department of Justice (DOJ) filed a complaint on 16 June 2021 claiming that the transaction could impact prices and reduce innovation.
This turnaround comes after the European Commission approved the project on 9 July 2021.
With the end of the merger process, Aon is required to pay 1 billion USD in fees to Willis Towers Watson. Both groups will continue to operate independently.
