According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada (IBC), the cost of natural catastrophes borne by insurers in 2016 is 5 billion CAD (3.7 billion USD). This amount has exceeded the previous record loss of 3.2 billion CAD (2.9 billion USD) in 2013.
The May 2016 Fort McMurray blaze [4], alone, cost insurers 3.7 billion CAD (2.8 billion USD), that is 74% of the year's losses.
