Sabotage of oil installations

The installations' sabotage acts by the population seeking to misappropriate oil were at the origin of the fire and the explosion of a pipeline which caused the death of more than 200 people on the shores of a Lagos suburb on May 12, 2006. In Nigeria, which is Africa's first oil producer with 2.6 million barrels a day, the quantity of misappropriated oil is estimated at 100 000 barrels a day. In 1998 more than a thousand people lost their lives in similar incidents.
