Compulsory insurance

As of May 8, 2014, all travelers driving over 161 km on motorways in the country are obliged to underwrite an insurance policy with the national insurer or the 11 private companies operating in the country. The price of this coverage was set at 0.3 USD per unit.

A maximum of two units may be purchased per trip. A compensation of 3 635 USD is provided in the event of death and a maximum of 2 493 USD is allocated in case of bodily injury. The move comes following the increase of accidents on motorways.
In the first four months of the year, 66 people died and 300 were injured on the 330 km-stretch that separates Yangon to Naypyidaw.
