The heavy downpour that has washed a large area of Africa since last July caused devastating floods in 18 countries. The toll is alarming: 300 casualties, over a million people affected, 650 000 of whom remained homeless, entire villages submerged, crops and food stocks destroyed and drinking water sources contaminated.
