Economic damages on the rise

April 23, 2013

The United Nations has revealed that the economic damages associated with natural catastrophes are increasing. It suggests that the hardest-hit countries take preventive measures to better withstand such events.
Since early 2011, catastrophes have cost the global economy 300 billion USD, that is, as much as for the entire year 2010. Damages covered by insurers amounted to 43 billion USD.
This figure includes natural and man-made catastrophes. Deaths related to floods and tropical cyclones are decreasing compared to those caused by earthquakes.
