Collapse of a building in Douala

On the night of 22 to 23 July 2023, a four-storey building, housing about forty people, collapsed on another single-storey residential building in Douala, Cameroon.

According to a provisional toll 37 people died and 21 were injured. Yet, according to the authorities, the number of deaths is expected to go up.

Several witnesses affirmed that a party was being held in the building while it was in very poor condition.

In Cameroon, the collapse of buildings is not uncommon due in particular to the non-compliance with building standards.
